Dr. Susanne S. Kilgo

Dr. Kilgo has been providing comprehensive eye care to patients in western North Carolina for over thirty years. She is passionate about individualized care in a relaxed environment. She enjoys treating eye diseases as well as fitting basic and specialty contact lenses for patient of all ages.

Dr. Kilgo graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with high honors. She attended graduate school in zoology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry. While in school she was selected for a team that provided vision examinations to students attending the deaf schools in Texas and Louisiana. In her senior year she was a teaching assistant working with first year students learning their clinical skills. She was selected for a special team that provided eye examinations to students at the Schools for the Deaf in Texas and Louisiana.

Dr Kilgo served on the Henderson County Board of Health for nine years. She volunteered with the Henderson County School system in many capacities and chaired Project Graduation. She is a member of First United Methodist Church Hendersonville. She is past president of the Mountain District Optometric Society. She has served as a trustee, secretary-treasurer and vice-president of the North Carolina Optometric Society where she is currently the president elect. She has been a member of the American Optometric Association for 40 years. 


Dr Kilgo is married to Dr. Douglas Kilgo. They have two daughters and numerous granddogs. When not in the office Dr. Kilgo enjoys hiking in Pisgah Forest, exploring historical sites and spending time with family and friends. Her bucket list is to visit all the National Parks.

DR. J Douglas kilgo

Dr. J. Douglas Kilgo was born and raised in Asheville and has practiced in Henderson County for 39 years. He provides quality eye care diagnosing and managing eye health conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from North Carolina State University. He attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where he earned a Master of Science in Public Health.


He did research at Baylor School of Medicine before entering optometry school. He completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at University of Houston College of Optometry. As a student he volunteered with Amigos de las Americas providing vision care in Honduras. He was also on
the team performing vision examinations for students at the Schools for the Deaf in Texas and Louisiana.


Dr. Kilgo is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He is past president of the Mountain District Optometric Society and is a 40 year member of the North Carolina Optometric Society and the American Optometric Association. He served on the Henderson County Board of Health for 10 years. He has volunteered at the Hendersonville Rescue Mission for over 30 years. He is a member of First United Methodist Church Hendersonville. He is married to Dr. Susanne Kilgo and they have 2 daughters and numerous granddogs. He enjoys playing guitar and hiking with friends and has hiked over 1200 miles on the Appalachian Trail.
