macular degen

Macular degeneration is the breakdown of the macula known as the part of the eye, helping see details. It typically affects older people and is associated with geriatric eye care. The likelihood of this disorder dramatically increases after people enter the later parts of their lives. Macular degeneration affects many people and is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States. We at Kilgo Eye Care serving, Asheville, NC, Fletcher, NC, Hendersonville, NC, Brevard, NC, and Weaverville, NC, know a lot about macular degeneration and how to screen for it with an eye exam from an optometrist on our optometry team.

Here is a list of the most common symptoms of this disorder to be aware of:

  • Dark spots in your central vision: If you have any dark or blurred areas in your central vision, you may have macular degeneration. Sometimes, you may also have a whited-out area in your vision that is also a sign of this disorder.
  • Your vision is blurred: You may notice that your vision became blurrier, and you need more light for reading, for example. Usually, once you have this symptom, it will continue getting worse.
  • Visual distortions or visual disturbance: For example, straight lines might seem bent.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for macular degeneration, but there is preventative care and eye care to help manage the symptoms. There are also certain treatment methods that allow to slow the progression of the disorder and vision loss. In order to find out what stage of the degeneration you have, it is recommended to see an eye doctor for an eye exam.

She is very thorough, to make certain the process is done right. After the exam, Melody helped my find frames that would work best with my prescription needs and pocketbook. She knew exactly how to maximize my insurance coverage. I would HIGHLY recommend Kilgo Eye Care for everyone.
